History is often remembered through revolutions, speeches, and landmark decisions. Yet some of the most enduring changes begin far more quietly, with an idea that challenges a deeply held belief. A single thought can encourage reflection where there was certainty, empathy where there was division, and understanding where there was silence. When such an idea speaks to something fundamentally human, it has the power to outlive generations, inspiring countless individuals to rethink not only how they see others, but also how they see themselves.
For Sara Ting, that idea found its voice through the Sun Poem – Are you greater than the sun/that shines on everyone: Black, Brown, Yellow, Red and White/ the sun does not discriminate. What began as four simple lines evolved into the foundation of World Unity Inc., a mission dedicated to advancing equality by awakening self-awareness rather than simply advocating reform. Through educational initiatives, public campaigns, creative expression, and the vision of the World Unity Landmark, she has spent decades encouraging people to confront unconscious bias, embrace humility, and recognise the shared humanity that exists beyond every label.
A Movement Born from Four Lines
When Sara wrote the Sun Poem in a personal journal in 1978, she never imagined that its simple, yet profound message would inspire a global movement dedicated to equality and inclusion. What began as a personal reflection gradually evolved into World Unity Inc., driven by a growing realization that the barriers of sexism and racism remain deeply embedded within society’s collective consciousness.
The Sun Poem soon extended far beyond the written page, becoming the foundation of a landmark public service campaign promoting racial and ethnic harmony. Initially launched in 1985 in Boston, the initiative reached audiences through television, radio, billboards, and public transportation, encouraging communities to reflect on equality and shared humanity. Its remarkable impact led to similar campaigns in New York City and Providence, where a coalition of culturally diverse nonprofit organizations united behind its message. The campaign also inspired a city and state-wide poetry competition that invited students to express their understanding of diversity and unity, while national television and radio broadcasts carried the poem’s message to audiences across the United States. Through these efforts, the Sun Poem demonstrated how creative expression could foster dialogue, inspire participation, and strengthen connections across diverse communities.
Over the decades, Sara has come to understand that these challenges persist because societies have yet to fully embrace the most fundamental truth: that every human being deserves equal dignity, respect, opportunity, and access to essential resources regardless of gender or race. Drawing inspiration from Albert Einstein’s belief that problems cannot be solved with the same level of consciousness that created them, she has dedicated her life’s work to encouraging people to rise above inherited prejudices and embrace a higher level of awareness.
The Power of Self-Awareness
For Sara, meaningful change cannot be achieved solely through legislation, policies, or technology because none of these can reach the unconscious mind where bias is formed.
She believes prejudice is learned through family, culture, and social conditioning, meaning it can also be unlearned. That responsibility, however, belongs to each individual. Self-awareness becomes the starting point of transformation, requiring the courage to confront uncomfortable truths, examine deeply held assumptions, and consciously release inherited biases.
Sara views this personal journey as the foundation upon which healthier schools, workplaces, communities, and nations are built. Particularly in an age where artificial intelligence, social media, and digital platforms rapidly amplify stereotypes and misinformation, she believes cultivating individual self-awareness has never been more urgent. Lasting societal transformation, she maintains, always begins with inner transformation.
When Forgiveness Became the Mission
A pivotal moment in Sara’s journey came when she learned of a young woman who discovered forgiveness after reading the Sun Poem.
That experience revealed something far greater than the impact of poetry, it demonstrated that forgiveness is a universal human need capable of healing relationships, communities, and even nations divided by conflict. Sara realized the poem carried a timeless message that transcended personal reflection and possessed the power to inspire collective transformation.
This realization became the foundation for the World Unity Landmark, envisioned as a permanent public symbol bringing the Sun Poem’s message to life. Over time, its influence expanded through music, TEDx presentations, digital billboard campaigns, educational initiatives, and international platforms, each carrying the same purpose: awakening self-awareness, strengthening human understanding, and inspiring greater unity across cultures.
Persevering Through Purpose
Building the World Unity Landmark has been a journey spanning more than three decades, sustained by unwavering purpose and deep faith that it will be realized. One of the biggest challenges was securing a home, which was accomplished in 2021; it has been accepted to be part of Dorchester Bay City Development after 28 years of searching. World Unity Inc. is deeply grateful to Accordia Partners and the community for embracing the landmark expressing equality for all
The 28-year search for a permanent home for the World Unity Landmark tested both patience and perseverance. There were many moments when progress seemed distant, yet Sara never allowed setbacks to weaken her commitment to the vision. Her belief in the Landmark’s purpose remained constant, sustained by a deep faith that the right opportunity would emerge in the right time. Rather than focusing on obstacles, she remained focused on the mission itself. Looking back, she sees the journey as a lesson in trust, resilience, and unwavering dedication to a purpose greater than herself.
Sara has remained focused on the vision rather than the challenges of securing funding, continually encouraged by stories demonstrating the poem’s transformative impact. Messages from children inspired by its accompanying song, individuals who found renewed hope, and supporters who described the mission as something the world urgently needs have continually reinforced her commitment.
The encouragement and generosity of globally recognized organizations, universities, longstanding sponsors, especially Chestnut Hill Realty a sponsor at their annual fundraiser for over 25 years, Changsho sponsoring an ad for 25 years, AAFCPA’s donating their services since the founding of the organization, dedicated and generous board members, and her family have further strengthened the movement. Above all, Sara credits her enduring faith in God as the greatest source of resilience, believing that building the World Unity Landmark is a calling rooted in a purpose far greater than herself.
A Landmark That Speaks to Every Heart
Sara envisions the World Unity Landmark as far more than an architectural structure. She hopes it becomes an experience that awakens people’s deepest humanity.
Centered around the question posed by the Sun Poem, “Are you greater than the sun that shines on everyone?”, the Landmark encourages visitors to reflect honestly upon themselves. For those wounded by discrimination, it offers healing, hope, and empowerment. For others, it inspires humility through honest self-examination.
She believes humility is among the most essential qualities for personal growth and effective leadership, yet one that cannot be imposed or legislated. Instead, it must be awakened through reflection. By inspiring greater humility and self-awareness, the Landmark seeks to cultivate the higher consciousness necessary to build societies that genuinely value every human being.
When Poetry Reaches Where Policies Cannot
While laws establish standards and policies shape institutions, Sara believes poetry reaches a place neither can access: the human heart.
The Sun Poem communicates a universal truth through a simple image: the sun shines equally upon everyone without discrimination. In doing so, it rises above politics, ideology, sexism, racism, and every other force that divides humanity.
For Sara, this illustrates poetry’s unique power. Rather than provoking debate, it quietly invites reflection, dissolves resistance, softens fear, and awakens compassion. Through emotional connection rather than argument, poetry opens pathways toward understanding that conventional approaches often struggle to achieve.
The Promise of the Next Generation
Decades of working with young people through educational workshops, songwriting competition, art initiatives, and school programs have left Sara deeply optimistic about the future.
She has consistently witnessed students respond instinctively to the message of unity, often carrying it beyond the classroom into their homes and communities. Stories of younger children learning the Sun Poem’s song from older siblings, along with former students remembering it years later, demonstrate its lasting influence.
At the same time, Sara recognizes the challenges today’s youth face as digital platforms continuously amplify stereotypes, prejudice, and misinformation. She believes helping young people consciously recognize and overcome unconscious bias is essential, and she views the Sun Poem as a practical tool for encouraging thoughtful reflection amid an increasingly noisy information landscape.
Creativity as a Bridge Between People
Sara believes creativity possesses a unique ability to advance equality because it speaks directly to shared human emotions.
Music, poetry, visual art, theatre, dance, and storytelling transcend cultural boundaries by communicating experiences that people instinctively understand. The song We All See the Stars, by John Ciambriello, inspired by the Sun Poem, demonstrated this power as it carried its message across the United States and ultimately to the United Nations.
Its success reinforced Sara’s conviction that creativity does more than communicate ideas—it enables people to feel their shared humanity. Once that emotional connection exists, genuine understanding naturally follows.
Finding Common Purpose Through Compassion
Throughout her work with educators, policymakers, artists, architects, businesses, and community leaders, Sara has discovered that lasting collaboration begins with humility.
She believes meaningful partnerships require patience, compassion, perseverance, and the willingness to genuinely listen. Institutional pride and individual ego often create barriers, making inclusive leadership and authentic relationship-building essential before shared goals can emerge.
Meeting people with understanding rather than judgment allows trust to develop naturally, creating the foundation upon which collective purpose can flourish.
One Story That Changed Everything
While there have been many occasions that have proven the power of the Sun Poem in the past three decades, there is one particular instance that stands out for Sara.
An Asian American woman was infuriated when she first read the poem since it brought back memories of discrimination she had faced in the past. However, as she repeatedly saw the poem graphically displayed in a 4’x 8’ poster every time she entered the lobby of the YWCA, her anger slowly converted to forgiveness.
It was this transformation that had a profound impact on Sara – she realized Sun Poem had an amazing capability of teaching people the most difficult aspect of humanity: forgiveness. This realization led to the formation of World Unity Inc. in 1993.
What made this experience especially meaningful was that the transformation did not occur after a single reading of the poem. The woman encountered the Sun Poem repeatedly as it was prominently displayed on a 4′ x 8′ poster in the lobby of the YWCA. Each time she passed it, the message invited her to reflect a little more deeply until anger gradually gave way to forgiveness. For Sara, this demonstrated the extraordinary power of visual communication and repeated exposure. It also revealed how a simple message, when encountered consistently, can influence the way people think and feel. Had the poem not been displayed so prominently, this experience may never have occurred, and the vision that eventually became World Unity Inc. might never have taken shape.
The Power of Shared Humanity
For Sara, effective dialogue starts when individuals first realize what they all have in common, their humanity.
The lesson provided by The Sun Poem is in reminding people that everyone receives the same light of the sun despite being from different cultures and having various backgrounds or physical abilities. Allowing oneself to spend some time on this realization moves the conversation from defending diversity to appreciating humanity.
Sara’s view on understanding is not about homogenizing the differences but seeing one’s humanity above anything else.
A Legacy Measured by Human Consciousness
Moving forward, Sara dreams for the World Unity Landmark to become a symbol that equality can only be achieved through the involvement of each individual.
This idea is easy to comprehend but carries a great message: Unconscious bias cannot be taken away by laws, policies, or technology. The real change starts from each person realizing their own bias and consciously choosing another direction.
Sara dreams of the Sun Poem being engraved in humanity’s conscience, a reminder that the sun shines on everyone equally. When the future generations grow up with this realization, valuing equality and respect as an everyday practice rather than a concept, then Sara will know that the purpose of her movement was achieved.
